Interview with Jennifer Friend  - 2012 KCWIFT & AMC Theatres KC Film Fest Short Screenplay Contest Winner
Congratulations for winning the grand prize of the KCWIFT & AMC Theatres KC FilmFest Short Screenplay Contest with your screenplay "The Rest of Her." Do you intend to make the film with the help of the $1000 prize?
• I definitely will use the prize funds to film ‘The Rest of Her’. As soon as I heard the exciting news that I had won the grand prize, I started thinking about a pre-production timeline to prepare for a shoot later this summer in Kansas City.

What is your experience in screenwriting and filmmaking?
• I have produced and directed two short documentary films related to urban education, and I have written, produced, and acted in narrative short and feature films. I am a co-founder of Big Atom Productions in Kansas City. Our most recent feature film, ‘Bonnie & Clyde vs. Dracula’ was filmed on location in St. Joseph, Missouri and is available on DVD. Filming ‘The Rest of Her’ will be my first experience with directing a narrative film, and I look forward to the opportunity!

What was the inspiration for your script “The Rest of Her”?
• The inspiration came out of thinking about relationships and how an individual’s perceived flaws can merit more attention than their positive attributes. The film uses magical realism to explore the relationship between a beautiful, intelligent, and sensitive woman and a man who finds it impossible to overlook her one imperfection.

How does the KCWIFT staged reading event for finalists help you and your screenplay?
• The staged reading event was something to look forward to with anticipation to see how the screenplays would be interpreted by the event organizers and the performers who were cast in the roles. I would love to see the event continue to support community connections among women screenwriters and filmmakers.

You collaborate with your husband Timothy Friend. How does that help in the writing process?
• For the short screenplay contest we bounced story and character details back and forth for weeks before the writing actually began. We have different perspectives and experiences, so it’s energizing to brainstorm ideas together and to try out dialogue during the writing process. I think we end up with something unique that is beyond the scope of what we could create individually.

What advice do you have to other writers that hope to win the KCWIFT Short Screenplay Contest?
• I think that it is a ‘win’ just to complete your screenplay, and beyond that to persevere to make your film. I think the strongest screenplays and films explore unique themes that resonate with an audience.
